Talking about Assessment for Learning

It was great to meet all of you today and explore the assessment for learning practices with students from Brechin Elementary. Hopefully each of you will take away at least one thing that you can use to move your learning forward in this area and support students with their learning. Let me know your thoughts by commenting on the blog and joining as a follower.

I have mixed feelings about the circle excercise that we did yesterday and would like to see a few more examples being done.

Inside, outside circles are not for everyone. The good news is there are many strategies to integrate into your instructional design to give feedback. The simplest way is partner share. I would recommend you start there and have them use the 2 stars, next step sheet to give feedback to their partner. The important thing is that you incorporate feedback in some way into your instructional design. As we share ideas throughout the course you will begin to build a toolbox of ideas to use on your practicum. Thanks for reflecting and posting on the blog!

I feel similar to Elissa, I would need to look into the circle activity more and find ways to adapt it to be successful with my class. I did really like the idea of having students edit other students work and learn to give advice and feedback. This a concept of critical thinking that I would like to follow up on and see what other activities can be used to promote this.

Hi Brandon! Great to hear from you. I love your focus on critical thinking. Feedback links very well to developing critical thinking skills. I am going to recommend you go to the Ministry of Education Assessment Webcasts check out other ideas of how to give feedback adn incorporate the other big 6 assessment for learning strategies. Thanks for posting!

I like the circle activity but I would have like it to be more organized next time. The room was not large enough to accommodate all the students. The ratio of VIU students to Brechin students were also not equal. The circle activity would be a good idea to use for students to share their ideas.

I like the circle activity and I can see how it can be useful for my practicum class. I felt that the room was not large enough to accommodate all the students. It was hard to assess the students on their story and their delivery. I don't know if the activity would have worked better if the students had enough time to think and come up with their story before sharing it to their partners.

Hi Coney! Great observations and application of how you would do things differently. You are right on all accounts if the room was bigger it would have run smoother. In the past I have done it outside in the fall and in the spring when the weather is better. I have also done inside, outside circles in the gym where there is more room.
Your other point of regarding giving students more time might have also been better. You will find that when you teach one of your greatest enemies is time. From my perspective I was just trying to get some ideas flowing so they could begin to get feedback and refine things for their comic strips. Some students need a lot of encouragement to talk and write. Feedback is sometimes the best way to get things rolling when you spend time talking in small groups or one on one. Every learner is different and honouring that along the way is critical. Because you are such a reflective preservice teacher you are already taking steps forward in becoming an excellent teacher. Thanks for responding and sharing your views.

Hi everyone! I found the session on Tuesday very useful and practical. In my practicum class, I would be able to do this activity with the students. There is a strong sense of the community in the class and I think this is important. I felt the students were really stepping out of their comfort zones to share their stories with us (strangers!) and it was interesting to experience! It would be an interesting activity to do with a buddy class. My practicum class is linked with a grade 6 class, so it would be fun to do this lesson. It would be fun to do a happy, exciting, funny moment and have the buddies and younger students share. It was a bit challenging in the small room, but we had to work with what we had access to!
